We support many Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) to develop a variety of skills and knowledge within our Community Specialist Palliative Care Service in Western Australia (WA).

For over 40 years, Silverchain has provided palliative care for over 3,500 West Australians with life limiting illnesses each year. We offer training opportunities for medical professionals to deliver comprehensive care that meets best practice standards, within our award winning In home Palliative Care service.

RMOs can access training as part of the Community Residency Program through the postgraduate Medical Council of Western Australia (PMCWA).

This 10 to 11 week program is designed to help you gain knowledge and experience in delivering person centred care to clients in the comfort of their home and community.

During your placement, you will be exposed to and perform a wide range of tasks supported by an experienced multidisciplinary clinical team of:

  • palliative medicine specialists
  • general practitioners (GPs)
  • nurses
  • social workers
  • spiritual care workers
  • support workers
  • allied health professionals
  • volunteers.

The training provides rich and diverse experiences in medical care in the community, and provides an opportunity to develop skills in:

  • Managing symptoms in palliative care, including the terminal care phase.
  • Managing cancer and non cancer diagnoses.
  • Pain management.
  • Communicating with patients and families.
  • Interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.

You will receive a comprehensive orientation and structured education program. Supervision is provided by experienced medical practitioners.

You will also complete weekly education sessions and be supported by your Practice Manager throughout your placement.
