A Christmas hero for Silverchain
As Silverchain celebrates 130 years of care, connection, and innovation this festive season, we are reminded of the remarkable individuals who have shaped our legacy. One such individual is Sylvia Rowland, a young girl from the small Western Australian town of Yuba (known today as Yuna), whose story exemplifies the spirit of community and compassion that has defined Silverchain since its founding in 1894.
Sylvia first connected with Silverchain through ‘Aunt Mary's Children Corner,’ a newspaper column penned by one of our founders, Muriel Chase, under the pseudonym ‘Aunt Mary.’ The column provided a space for children to share stories and learn about helping others. Inspired by Aunt Mary's message, Sylvia eagerly joined the Silverchain League, a group of children dedicated to supporting those in need.
But Sylvia was not content with simply being a member. In 1912, she and her friend Edith Ash organised a Silverchain Christmas Tree fete in Yuba. The event was a resounding success, with the community coming together to raise funds for Silverchain's mission at the time of providing care to the sick and vulnerable children of Perth.
The children of Yuba helped decorate the tree and make small items to sell at the fete. They also performed songs, spreading Christmas cheer throughout the community. The event raised over £6 (today worth nearly $900); a considerable sum of money in those days.
Sylvia's dedication did not go unnoticed. Aunt Mary awarded Sylvia a ‘Good Service Medal’ in recognition of her outstanding contribution. This medal, a symbol of Sylvia's compassion and community spirit, is now proudly held in the Silverchain Heritage Collection in Perth.
Sylvia's story, a testament to the power of young people to make a difference for their community, is interwoven with Silverchain's 130-year history. Her initiative and dedication to helping others embody the spirit of our organisation, showcasing our early connection with the community and our enduring commitment to care.
