For many Western Australians, the mention of Flower Day evokes a rush of vivid, cherished memories. More than just an event, the annual Flower Day was a community institution that raised valuable funds for Silverchain and produced a vibrant spectacle that mirrored the excitement of a show day. As we mark its 75th anniversary this year, we look back to a time when the whole city bloomed.

Silverchain’s inaugural Flower Day began in Perth in 1950, sowing the seeds of a beloved tradition that has touched the hearts of Western Australians for generations. Among those early memories is Elaine, born in 1944, who fondly recalls being “only a little girl of 6 or7” at her first celebration. Now 80, she shares in vivid recollections in the short video below – a moving tribute to the enduring magic of that special day.

Restored photographs from Silverchain’s Heritage Collection reveal a charming montage of vintage cars and period buildings, all serving as a backdrop to the true stars of the show: the community we served. Dressed in their finest, it was a special occasion that encouraged everyone to truly dress up and enjoy the spectacle of their city in support of our much loved organisation.

In the late 1940s, the Western Australian government began funding district nursing, allocating Silverchain £2,500 at the time (equivalent to $225,748 today). However, a creative solution was needed to raise more money so Silverchain could support more people.

Drawing inspiration from successful fundraising events in other states, Silverchain decided to host a flower festival in Perth. A publicity campaign was launched to generate excitement for the first Flower Day on Friday 15 September 1950.

The city buzzed with competitions for the most stunning floral displays decorating buildings, shop windows, and even intricate flower carpets and emblems. To support the event, Silverchain sold Flower Day badges, buttons, and floral arrangements. Flower-themed wishing wells were set up throughout the city as another way to encourage donations from the community.

Silverchain’s first Flower Day was a great success. More than half of the buildings in Perth’s CBD were decorated with flowers, turning them into stunning floral works of art. A total of £2,750 ($248,322) was raised during Perth’s first Flower Day in support of Silverchain. The event became the organisation’s flagship fundraising event for years to come in Perth and nearby areas.

Today, we still receive valuable support from our generous donors, with each donation helping us work towards creating a better home care system for all Australians.
