Silverchain is launching a new initiative to help older Australians stay connected and socially engaged. The Silverchain Lunch Club program offers weekly online lunch sessions, giving participants the chance to chat, share experiences and enjoy companionship from home.

For those who need it, Silverchain provides simple technology and support, making it easy for anyone to join.

Silverchain’s Director of Research Discovery, and clinical psychologist, Adjunct Professor Tanya Davison said loneliness is considered an epidemic and a major public health risk.

“Loneliness is a real issue for many older Australians,” Adjunct Prof Davison said.

“The Lunch Club gives people a chance to connect, share and feel part of a community again. Social engagement isn’t just nice to have, it’s essential for wellbeing. This program supports both emotional and physical health by helping participants stay connected and engaged.”

A 2021 study published in Plos One estimated that around 28% of older people in high-income countries, including Australia, experience loneliness. Silverchain’s own research, published in the Australian Journal on Ageing, found that loneliness was a significant risk factor for depression and anxiety in older Australians receiving in-home aged care, which highlights the importance of addressing this common problem.

The Silverchain Lunch Club pilot program will be evaluated to ensure it meets participants’ needs and effectively reduces feelings of isolation. Participation is voluntary, free of charge and fully supported by Silverchain team members – with $100 vouchers being offered to those who take part.

Older people are encouraged to participate if they are:

  • Currently receiving aged care services from Silverchain;
  • Feel as though they are lacking connection with others; and
  • Would like to have lunch with other people, from the comfort of home. If you are interested in taking part, or have any questions, please email research@silverchain.org.au before 12 September.

The Silverchain Lunch Club initiative has been supported by generous donations to Silverchain Foundation, helping to expand its reach and impact across Western Australia and South Australia.
